The organ: the essentials

The pipe organ is a panpipe excited by compressed air: while a flautist's breath runs out and string vibrations die away, organ tone conquers duration and stays equal to itself. Invention is generally credited to Ctesibius of Alexandria (3rd century BC). The first naturally polyphonic instrument, favoured by Christian liturgy for ten centuries and only later heard in concert halls (19th century), it trains the ear of choir, cantata and oratorio singers.

History: from hydraulus to the concert hall

From the ancient hydraulus, powerful voice of the Roman circus, to discreet portatives, chamber positives and regal organs, up to grand instruments of thirty-two-foot stops and five or six manuals, the organ is a genre rich in species. As P.P. Lacas notes, each instrument is like a face: few twins, and serial production almost impossible.

Christian liturgy made it the king of sacred instruments; organ repertoire feeds German and French baroque music, from Buxtehude to Bach, from Couperin to Handel (about twenty organ concertos). In the 19th century the organ enters the concert hall; Liszt writes a Prelude and Fugue on B.A.C.H. (1855). Messiaen, organist at La Trinité, extends the link between console and sonic invention.

Description: a sounding "body"

It can be described like a human body. The case (buffet) is the visible part; the façade (montre) holds the front pipes. The blower (today electric) feeds the bellows, a reservoir from which wind trunks lead to the windchests, pressurised chests on which the pipes stand.

Action links key to pallet: mechanical (oldest and best), pneumatic (late 19th century, unreliable, delayed response) or electric (20th century: electromagnets, console possibly far from the case). The console holds manuals (Great, Positive, Swell, 51 to 61 notes), a pedalboard of about thirty notes, stop knobs, couplers and pedal couplers.

Pipes are still measured in feet (about 32 cm). An 8' Principal has a longest pipe of eight feet (about 256 cm): its A matches piano pitch. A 16' stop sounds an octave lower, a 4' an octave higher, on the same key.

Flue pipes and reed pipes

Flue pipes (recorder principle): air strikes the languid and upper lip; pitch depends on pipe length. Metal (tin-lead alloy) or wood. Among foundation stops: medium-scale principals (montre, prestant, doublette), wide-scale flutes and bourdon, narrow-scale strings and salicionals.

Mutations are never played alone: they reinforce harmonics to "mutate" timbre (nasard 2 2/3, tierce 1 3/5, larigot 1 1/3; cornet; mixtures and cymbals with breaks). Dom Bédos (1776) judged full organ, well fed by foundations, the most harmonious of organ sounds.

Reed pipes (vibrating brass tongue) are all metal; a tuning wire sets pitch. Octave ranks only (16', 8', 4', 2'): bombarde, trumpet and clairon form the French grand jeu, often with cornet. Other names: cromorne, oboe, regal, dulcian; horizontal chamade reeds. The tremulant imitates a vibrato close to the voice.
