International Voice Symposium
Singing — Medicine — Psychoanalysis
2nd edition, 22–24 September 2023, Villa Medici Giulini, Milan
CALYP — Paris Vocal Arts Centre organised the second edition of its Voice Symposium: Singing — Medicine — Psychoanalysis on 22, 23 and 24 September 2023, featuring specialist speakers from medicine, the arts and academia.
The holistic approach is the hallmark of CALYP's mission. This consortium gathered for its second edition at Villa Medici Giulini in Milan, during which Adeline Toniutti gave a singing masterclass for the singers of the Adeline Toniutti Academy.
About CALYP
CALYP — Paris Vocal Arts Centre is a non-profit association dedicated to singing education, vocal rehabilitation and the promotion of art. It supports professional singers, including those from the Paris Opera, as well as singers of all levels who wish to reach new goals in building their career and artistic vision.
Programme
Specialist presentations: individual talks and cross-disciplinary discussions.
A concert featuring Paolo Parentini, bass, and Silga Tiruma, soprano, from the Paris Opera, concluded this study day that gave generous space to exchange and dialogue.
The Symposium is intended for singers, people who use their voice extensively or suffer from a vocal pathology, physicians, medical and paramedical professionals, students and researchers.
The Specialists
Dr Jean CHARMOILLE, Psychiatrist, Psychoanalyst and Psychologist
After a classical secondary education, Jean Charmoille became a psychologist and then a specialist in psychiatry. This academic approach to the psyche of the speaking being could have been enough for him.
That was before two events shattered this path and propelled him onto another stage. First, a psychoanalysis that opened the way to a new form of knowledge, then the enigma of Don Juan's cry in the finale of Mozart's Don Giovanni, which struck him one day like that of the silence in Munch's Scream.
Jean Charmoille now practises as a psychoanalyst and sings every day.
Adeline TONIUTTI, Vocal Coach and Singer
Adeline Toniutti is a voice expert. She serves as a vocal coach in the continuing education programme for singers at the Paris Opera. She organises many masterclasses with renowned artistic personalities: Bruno Berberes, casting director for The Voice, and Mariella Devia, queen of bel canto.
A lyric singer until 2014, Adeline Toniutti suffered an accident at the height of her career that burned her respiratory tract and severely damaged her vocal cords. She founded CALYP to support singers and people suffering from vocal cord pathologies.
Since 2021, she has been the lead singer of a Freddie Mercury tribute show, touring in New York City and across Europe.
